  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme (or 1 teaspoon fresh thyme)
  • ½ cup beef broth (or vegetable broth)
  • 4 large Yukon Gold potatoes, sliced ¼-inch thick
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for greasing)
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese (or Swiss, cheddar, or mozzarella)
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup heavy cream or whole milk
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
  • Fresh thyme sprigs (for garnish)
  • Extra Parmesan cheese (for garnish)
  • Crispy fried onions (optional)

Instructions

  1. Sauté sliced onions with butter and olive oil until golden brown (15-20 minutes).
  2. Grease a baking dish and layer half the potato slices. Sprinkle with garlic powder and thyme.
  3. Pour half of the broth over the potatoes, then add half the sautéed onions. Repeat layers.
  4. Mix cheeses with cream, salt, black pepper, and thyme; pour over layered potatoes.
  5. Cover with foil and bake at 350°F for about 45 minutes. Remove foil during the last 15 minutes to brown the top.
  6. Let cool slightly, garnish with fresh thyme and extra Parmesan before serving.
