  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp red food coloring (gel or liquid)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (for filling)
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp salt (for filling)
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened (for frosting)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Pinch of salt (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Combine warm milk and water in a bowl; mix with sugar and yeast. Let sit until frothy.
  2. Add softened butter, eggs, cocoa powder, red food coloring, vanilla extract, and salt. Gradually mix in flour until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl; cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
  5. Prepare filling by mixing softened butter with brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
  6. Roll out dough into a rectangle; spread filling evenly and roll tightly.
  7. Cut into equal pieces (about 12) and arrange in a greased baking dish; let rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for about 25 minutes until golden brown.
  9. While baking, whip up frosting by blending cream cheese with softened butter; gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla until creamy.
  10. Frost rolls while still warm.
