  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/3 cup whole milk (room temperature)
  • 1/3 cup heavy cream (room temperature)
  • 1 large egg (room temperature)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 2 ounces cream cheese (room temperature)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons apple butter

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apple filling by combining diced Gala apples, apple butter, granulated sugar, water, lemon juice, ground cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt in a saucepan. Cook until the apples soften.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together water and cornstarch; set aside. In another bowl, mix bread flour, sugar, yeast, salt, milk, heavy cream, egg, vanilla extract, and the cornstarch mixture until combined. Knead until smooth.
  3. Let the dough rise in a greased bowl until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
  4. Roll out the dough into a rectangle; spread softened butter and apple filling on top before sprinkling brown sugar and cinnamon.
  5. Roll tightly into a log shape and cut into pieces; place in a greased baking dish and let rise again (30 minutes).
  6. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  7. For frosting: Beat together butter and cream cheese; gradually add powdered sugar along with heavy cream and apple butter until smooth.
  8. Frost cooled rolls generously and serve warm.
